Product Registration

Product Registration – Keeping You Safe in Your Home as well as
Improving Your After Sales Service

Isn’t registering a product just a way to warranty it?

Making sure you are covered for the whole warranty period of a product can be a benefit of product registration, however another, more important benefit of registering, is so that the manufacturer can easily get in touch with you if it turns out that the product that you have bought is somehow faulty or dangerous.

Electrical products are recalled more often than you might think, but typically only 10-20% are actually returned, which is largely down to the fact that the manufacturer often has no way of directly contacting those customers who purchased the item being recalled. This means that there
are millions of potentially unsafe appliances in use within homes every year.

Not convinced? How about if we told you that 13 fires a day across the UK are found to be caused by faulty and recalled electrical goods – that amounts to 4,745 fires a year – a number which could be greatly reduced with just a few minutes of your time.

The easiest way to register your products

Registering a product is simple and quick. The easiest way is to visit the Register My Appliance website, which has links to all of the major electronic manufacturers.

In order to register your product you’ll usually need:

• The brand name
• The model (usually either a name or number)
• The serial number
• The date of purchase (or as near to it as you can remember

Registering should only take a few minutes of your time – a worthy investment considering the long-term peace of mind it provides.

What products can and should I register?

If it’s electrical – register it!
Seriously, anything and everything electrical is worth registering from your large appliances like washing machines and fridge freezers to your smaller products such as kettles and toasters and even electric shavers and hair straighteners.

If I receive a recall notice, what should I do?

The recall notice you receive from the manufacturer should give you details of what to do next but if it doesn’t, you should contact either the seller or Citizens Advice.

If the item was purchased from a UK seller, Citizens Advice can help. If it was purchased from a company based inside the EU, European Law will protect you – you can contact the UK European Consumer Centre for more details. If you purchased it from a company outside the EU then unfortunately it is unlikely that either UK or EU law will be able to assist you.

I’m worried about my appliances which I haven’t registered!

You can check whether a specific electrical item has been recalled in the past by visiting electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/recall
Their product checker contains details of electrical products recalled since 2007. If a product you search isn’t listed then it hasn’t been recalled and should be safe to use. However, if you have concerns about its safety then contact the retailer or manufacturer to alert them to a potential problem.
